worked in the shadows in the 1960s, when she led the creation of the software that enabled Apollo 11 to land on the Moon without incident. Yet, her role was only fully recognized several decades later, when she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016: a typical example of the Matilda effect, where women scientists are celebrated long after their achievements.
